The Blend is part of the Gabriëlskloof Estate range of wines, together with our Rosebud, Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc and Syrah. This range offers a selection of boutique-style wines that always over-deliver on quality and value. Climate & Viticulture The 2021 harvest stood out for consistently cooler weather throughout the growing and ripening period, leading to slower ripening and increased flavour development. Vinification Following careful hand-picking, bunches were destemmed and transferred to fermentation tanks using a gravity system, allowing for whole berryfermentation. Naturally fermented and aged 18 months in older Frenchbarrique. The components of the wine are: Cabernet Sauvignon (70%),Cabernet Franc (13%), Merlot (11%) and Malbec (6%). Tasting note Intense black fruits alongside cured meats and leather make this a dense and concentrated vintage with a structure to match. Lifted floral notes and savoury, wet earth aromatics add elegance, while ripe mulberries, cassis and liquorice lead a pure fruited palate that has a gentle spiciness from cloves and star anise. Finely integrated tannin and robust alcohol make this a hefty vintage, drinkable in youth and with legs to age.

The Chenin Blanc is part of our Gabriëlskloof Range, together with the Rosebud, Sauvignon Blanc, The Blend and Syrah. This range offers a selection of boutique-style wines that always over-deliver on quality and value. Vintage '23 was characterised by low yields and early ripening, resulting in wines of excellent concentration and marked freshness, particularly in the whites. Late-season rain delayed ripening on reds, leading to challenges, but increased flavour development and elegance. The Chenin Blanc 2023 was fermented wild in stainless steel tanks and left on its lees for seven months before bottling. White peach, apple blossom and quince lead the nose with fresh hay and lanolin. The palate has a moreish citric tang and the crunchy texture of apple core. Like prior vintages, a salted macadamia quality is present on the finish to provide a layer of complexity and length.

This vintage of Rosebud was made with 100% Syrah that was whole bunch pressed and fermented and spent a couple of months settling in tank before blending and bottling. Bright red fruits like pomegranate and wild strawberry lead on the nose, before more savoury elements of tomato leaf and flint. The palate is fresh and textured, with a berries and cream texture along with sour fig and unripe plums that bring tang and freshness. Bright, crunchy and refreshing but not without layers of complexity.

The Sauvignon Blanc is part of our Gabriëlskloof Range, together with the Rosebud, Chenin Blanc, The Blend and Syrah. Vintage '23 was characterised by low yields and early ripening, resulting in wines of excellent concentration and marked freshness, particularly in the whites. The Sauvignon Blanc 2023 was fermented wild in stainless steel tanks and left on its lees for seven months before bottling. Signature blackcurrant and flint aromas are boldly prominent with subtler notes of dried flowers and orange blossom. The palate is racy and fresh, with litchi and green pineapple, leading towards a saline, nori-like character. The zip and tang of fresh limes makes for a mouthwatering finish.

This range offers a selection of boutique-style wines that always over-deliver on quality and value. Climate & Viticulture The 2022 harvest benefitted from good winter rains and full dams, which set the tone for a cool, even growing season.  Vinification Following careful hand-picking, a portion of the bunches were destemmed and transferred to fermentation tanks using a gravity system, allowing for whole berry fermentation, while the rest went in as whole bunch. Naturally fermented and aged in older French barrique for nine months.  Tasting note A broody, tightly wound vintage showing classic notes of violets and earth as well as sour cherries and a spiciness from rainbow pepper and nutmeg. There is a vegetal, leafy earthiness to the palate as well as graphite-like acidity to hold up that dense core of fruit.

Live in nature, at home

All the senses come to life with this finely curated Chardonnay. The nose is driven by fresh stone fruit and citrus. The zesty minerality and acidity is imparted by amphora clay vessels. A delicate oak embraces a playful aromatics.

This is an exquisite balance of 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Syrah and 15% Cinsault. Powerful on entry, with integrated oak, a sumptuous red and black fruit, in a mesh of fine coated tannins, demands the palate’s attention. It is an intriguing complex of savoury aromas. It will mature well over ten years, if you can bare to wait that long.

Arenite refers to one of the major textural sandstone groups present on our farm. Our Syrah is happily rooted in these rocky soils as it is rooted in our history. Made from the same original Syrah clone as its acclaimed predecessor, this Stellenzicht stalwart exudes its origin with rich layers of dark berry fruit, spice and finely textured tannins.

Silcrete is a lithological term for a strongly hardened rock composed mainly of inherited quartz grains. These rocky soils are ideal for growing Cinsault. Our fruit come from 28-year-old dryland bush vines, yielding a fragrant wine with intense fruit aromas and lacy tannins. Aged in large and old wooden barrels to add complexity and balance.

The Rosé is blend of 71% Syrah, 16% Grenache and 13% Cinsault, gently crafted and aged in old barrels to protect the floral aromatics, juicy fruit and delicate yet fresh finish. Made to be enjoyed with friends.

Tristone refers to the three types of sandstone soils that our Cabernet Sauvignon vines are grown in. Each soil type brings a unique element to the wine. This wine showcases the terroir of these soils through its elegant balance between fruit, structure and lingering tannins.

The Landscape Series is a range of five wines that show the best of Gabriëlskloof's vineyards, together with some special old vine treasures, and aims to give an honest representation of the elements that make them unique. We wanted the labels to reflect this approach and commissioned Niël Jonker – well-known for his landscape panels painted on location – to capture the spirit of our Overberg landscapes. The 19-year-old vineyard is situated on a rocky mountainside site on the Gabriëlskloof property. The soil combines Overberg Shale and Table Mountain Sandstone. Blackberries, liquorice and cloves form part of a perfumed vintage that is alive with a fresh herbaceousness that recalls bouquet garni. That almond husk texture to the tannins is again present on the palate, adding a savoury counterpoint to brighter, red-fruited notes. Elegant and coiled, promising plenty more to offer over time.

OLD VINE CHENIN BLANC, SWARTLAND (LANGKLOOF, NUWELAND, ROOIDRAAI & JAKKALSFONTEIN) All fruit was whole bunch pressed and 100% wild fermented in different-sized clay amphorae, as well as 400- and 500L older French barrels. The wine spent nine months on its lees before blending and bottling. Tightly wound at first but unwinds into a full and layered expression of its Swartland origins. Yellow kumquats, pear and straw accompany a fresh and zesty acidity and a mineral core. With time, the fruit grows in opulence in the glass, with almonds and buttered toast joining the bouquet and a light flinty smoke. Precise and age-worthy.

All fruit was whole bunch pressed and 100% wild fermented in 400- and 500L French barrels. The wine spent ten months on its lees before blending and bottling. Bruised apples, thatch and chamomile are prominent on a richly exotic nose, supported by ginger and thai basil. Flavours of yellow pear, lemon drop and greengage brighten the palate while quince and dark honey combine for a textured and slightly viscous finish. Decadent, but delicately so.

The Syrah on Sandstone site is mountainous and made up of broken Sandstone, making it incredibly tough for vineyards to grow. This merciless environment leads to natural low vigour and minimal yields, resulting in a complex, unique wine. Although looking strong and happy, our sandstone syrah blocks bear very little fruit with tremendous concentration. Crushed blueberries, black plums and mixed spice lead on the nose while the palate introduces a fresh, minty herbaceousness and texture of olive pith. Those signature chalky tannins again hold the wine in perfect balance.

The Landscape Series is a range of five wines that show the best of Gabriëlskloof's vineyards, together with some special old vine treasures, and aims to give an honest representation of the elements that make them unique. We wanted the labels to reflect this approach and commissioned Niël Jonker – well-known for his landscape panels painted on location – to capture the spirit of our Overberg landscapes. The fruit  for the Syrah on Shale comes from a single Bokkeveld shale site on the Gabriëlskloof property. A high clay component allows for excellent water retention and a resultant riper fruit profile in the wine. Another factor that has a significant influence on our terroir is wind, and this vineyard site faces the full brunt of the south-easterly wind, providing just enough stress for the vines to show their true colours. Depth and intensity on the nose, with blue flowers, blackberries and grilled meat nodding towards Coté Rotie. The palate is plush and concentrated with darker fruit from cassis alongside kalamata olives and black pepper. Vibrant acidity balances the fruit weight for a long, complex finish and augurs well for ageing.
